The Centre for Disability Studies (CDS) is a non-profit organisation that began operating in April 1997.  It is affiliated with the Sydney Medical School and the Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney.  Originally well-known as the Centre for Developmental Disability Studies (CDDS), the Centre was renamed in 2008.  The Centre is governed by a Board of Directors.

Vision and mission

Over the past 12 years the Vision and Mission of the Centre have been to create and disseminate knowledge that would  improve the lives of people with disabilities. This has been done through designing and developing research, teaching and clinical practice to inform disability policy and practice.

Renewal

A process of renewal in relation to the strategic direction of the CDS is underway and by early June we hope to annouce our plan for the next three years. In the meantime we continue to work  in partnership with people with disabilities, families and other research and development centres and government departments in promoting the health and well being and citizenship of people with disabilities.

The work of the CDS is characterised by

• An Australian and international focus through our close links with the world wide research community. This includes current and former staff who are presidents of international and national disability organisations.
• A multi-disciplinary approach with research and teaching staff from a range of backgrounds including medicine, health sciences, education, psychology, speech pathology, physiotherapy, sociology and the law.
• Staff who also have a wide range of practical experience in providing support to people with disabilities and their families.
