About Gemma
Gemma Lucy Smart is a Senior Research Officer with the Centre for Disability Studies (CDS) and a lived experience PhD scholar at The University of Sydney. Their doctoral research with the ReMinding Histories Lab explores spirituality in the context of mental distress, consumer activism, community-based mental health services, and self-help groups during late 20th Century Australia. They are also recognised for their work on the philosophy of psychiatry, particularly Internet Gaming Disorder.
Gemma has worked on multiple research projects at The University of Sydney, including supporting university success for students living with psychosis and co-designing Driv-R – a mobile application for self-directed mental health recovery. With a strong focus on co-production and participatory methodologies, they bring extensive experience as a lecturer and tutor specialising in the history and philosophy of the psy-sciences and disability ethics. They serve as Vice President of AAHPSSS and CAPA Disabilities Officer. Outside of research, Gemma is a musician and poet, pursuing creative projects that inform their commitment to lived experience-led research.
