Despite the UN’s commitment to inclusive education, individuals with intellectual disabilities still face significant barriers in accessing higher education, limiting their opportunities for personal growth, social inclusion and career prospects.
Developed by the Centre for Disability Studies at the University of Sydney, uni 2 beyond offers individuals with intellectual disabilities a two-year university experience. Students attend lectures, participate in tutorials and engage in campus life alongside their peers, supported by peer mentors. While students do not receive formal qualifications, uni 2 beyond empowers students to set personal learning goals, develop valuable skills and form lasting social connections.
Since its launch, uni 2 beyond has transformed lives, offering participants opportunities to enhance their independence, self-determination and social networks. It also fosters a more inclusive environment for the entire university community.
With continued support from the JACE Foundation, the program paves the way for a more inclusive future in education, challenging outdated perceptions about the capabilities of people with intellectual disabilities.
Voting for the award is now closed, and we are excitedly awaiting the results on Tuesday 25 February.
