About the uni 2 beyond Mentor Program

uni 2 beyond students attend lectures and tutorials of their choice, and participate in university social life through engagement with their peers. uni 2 beyond works with its students to reach their potential, increasing their capability to make a contribution to society and gain independence. Article 24 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) underpins access to education for people with disability with a human rights framework.

Based on this premise, uni 2 beyond was founded in 2012. Our mentoring program aims to enhance the students’ sense of belonging at university. It is also an opportunity for mentors to develop advocacy skills and support social inclusion.

What is a Mentor?

uni 2 beyond students receive peer support through matched mentors. A mentor is a trusted peer who provides support and guidance to assist uni 2 beyond students to have a rich and fulfilling experience at the university, both academically and socially. Mentor roles are flexible and depend on mentor and mentee interests and availability.

The Role can Include:

  • Sitting with the uni 2 beyond student in class.
  • Regularly enquiring how university is going, how is the day going.
  • Assisting in understanding course content through brief discussions before and after class.
  • Informing and inviting the mentee to social activities.
  • Facilitating new social connections.
  • Inviting/supporting the uni 2 beyond student to join a club or society.
  • Meeting up regularly. This could be for coffee, lunch or other activities you both enjoy
